The eastern wolf is slightly smaller in size and may be “skinnier” than the grey wolf. The back and sides are covered with longer black hairs (similar to a German Shepherd with a coat factor). They also have a slight reddish coloring behind the ears as well as a very “bushy” tail.

Quite often they are mistaken for coyotes and while grey wolves will drive out our kill coyotes, it has been observed that male eastern wolves may take a coyote female as a mate and produce fertile offspring.
